The Loretto Mustangs took on the Huntland Hornets last night at the Loretto Jamboree looking to start the season of right.

The Mustangs would jump out to an early 7-0 over the Hornets with a Touchdown pass by Mason Tidwell to his wide receiver in Hunter Smith in under a four-minute drive.

Huntland would get the ball for the first time in the game after the Mustangs touchdown, but things went south quick. The Hornets’ first play would result in a fumble recovered by the Mustangs on their own 29-yard line, putting them in prime position to score again.

After the recovery it didn’t take long for the Musangs to get back in the endzone. Tidwell will throw his second touchdown pass to Dillon Thompson for a 14-yard touchdown reception.

Near the end of the first quarter Loretto would come up big defensively to hold the Hornets going for it on 4th & 1 giving the ball back to the Mustangs offense.

Marching down the field once again, Tidwell would throw his third touchdown of the night to Thompson once again making it 21-0 after the two-point conversion.

Coach Barry Daniel was pleased with the Mustangs and their eagerness to get back on the field.

“It was fun. That’s what I told the guys just to be able to go out and to get to see them compete against somebody else than each other…. We had to practice against one another extra, so it was exciting to see some dudes get out on the field.” Daniel said.

Coach Daniel was also impressed with his team offensively and their execution.

“Just our ability to compete. Some of the bigger mistakes we see here or there are things that happen, but tonight we were just real basic and obviously scoring 28 points in a quarter is impressive. How we take care of Loretto I felt we did a good job of that tonight and we try to not get too high if it’s good or too low if it’s bad.” Daniel said.

The Mustangs are excited after they defeated the Hornets 35-0 and look like they are getting ready for the big game next Friday.

“The first game against Collinwood is always a good game right of the gate. They bring a good crowd and are usually a very competitive team. I want to see if we can build on what we did tonight to take and learn from our mistakes. Maybe take another step forward, because you don’t want to make mistakes next week that you didn’t make next week.” Daniel said.

The Mustangs will be back in action this upcoming Friday to take on the Trojans of Collinwood for the first game of the season at home.
