The Lawrence County Girls Basketball team wanted to come out and prove a point on Tuesday night as they were taking on an old rival in Columbia. The Lady Cats made a statement in a big way knocking off the Lions 63-43 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
“They’re playing confident,” LCHS head coach Wendi Scott said. “That’s something we’ve talked about recently. When you’re playing confident how do you keep that confidence? That’s something we really emphasize in our program, is building that confidence up and protecting it.”
The confidence was apparent from the start. Lawrence County took a 32-9 lead into halftime and didn’t let up from there. The biggest difference between the two teams was at the three point line. The Lady Cats shot 13-of-22, while the Lady Lions shot just 1-of-12.
Kabry Tinin led the way with 21 points, all coming from behind the arch.
“She’s playing really well, playing with a lot of confidence,” Scott said. “Confidence is your greatest strength or greatest liability. For her, it’s going for her right now. We had some other girls step up. Thirteen threes, I’m really proud of that.”
Defense was a strong point as well for Lawrence County. They forced 12 turnovers and got 18 points off of those. They also won the rebounding battle 38 to 34.
“We’ve got to convert those,” the coach said. “We don’t always convert those. We played under control. We got into our lanes. We moved the ball well. I thought we did a good job of converting those defensive rebounds and turnovers to points.”
Laney Kate King chipped in with 11 points for the Lady Cats. Ryann Hughes had seven points and five rebounds. Keely Frazier had six rebounds and led the team with four assists. Freshman Liyah Dixon came off the bench to get nine points and three rebounds.
Columbia (3-2) was led by Natasia Barner who had 22 points and seven rebounds to go along with two assists. Kayla Crawford contributed with 17 points and six rebounds. The Lady Lions were also 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
Up next, the Lady Cats will host Battle Creek Thursday before they travel to Richland on Saturday. Both games will be streamed on the X Sports Network via Facebook and Youtube.
